What do 360 and CBD have in common?

Cannabis derived products have gained positive recognition for their medical use with treatments for symptoms relating to Alzheimers Disease, Parkinsons Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, pain, anxiety, depression, and the list goes on…. You might not know it yet but these products have also found a vital place amongst athletes and sports professionals and are even filtering through to mainstream shelves. If you haven’t tried it in your coffee or in a cocktail yet, you might be missing out!

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid constituent of cannabis. When we talk about CBD, we are referring to the THC-free, non-psychoactive products available on shelves in Planet Organic, John Bell & Croydon, Holland & Barrett and other high street stores. In other words, it won’t get you ‘high’.

While THC is the principal psychoactive component of Cannabis and has certain medical uses, CBD stands out because it is both non-intoxicating and displays a broad range of potential medical applications. These properties make it especially attractive as a therapeutic agent.” – Leafly.

CBD is, however, claimed to have properties that positively impact your mind and body; from reducing anxiety, helping sleep, increasing focus… We like to think of it a real life, super effective ‘rescue remedy’ that comes in the form of oil drops, cream, capsules, and in the wise words of Drake “even my CBD got chocolate in it.” When you consume CBD products your body takes the nutrients it needs from it and releases the rest so you will never over-do it.

This wonder-product reminds us of our good friend Physiotherapy, known for it’s healing properties, tackling many of the issues that CBD addresses. Physiotherapy and our other manual therapies have a wide range of additional superpowers that aren’t as commonly known.

Here is just the tip of the iceberg of what Function360 services and CBD have in common:

Pain Relief

Function360: Of course it depends on the pain and its cause, but, following an in-depth assessment your therapist will recommend a range of specialised manual therapies to address the root of the symptoms. Most often our treatments will provide some instant relief that allows improved movement and ongoing recovery, treating the source of the problem to stop it from reoccurring. Much like CBD, taking your recommended daily dose (e.g. doing your prescribed exercises) is crucial.

CBD: There is a tonne of testimonials from people whose lives have been completely transformed by CBD, as well as celebrities and athletes known to ‘dose themselves’ before an event  (Mandy Moore swears by it for taking on the red carpet in heels!). So how does it actually work? It’s been recently discovered that the body has a network of receptors called the  ‘endocannabinoid’ system. Biologists believe this ‘master regulatory system’ helps to maintain homeostasis (aka maintaining our body’s balance), and affects our reactions to stimuli like stress and pain. The clue is in the name, but CBD essentially uses this system to alter our perceptions of pain. Your usual painkillers work by overloading your pain-reception nerve cells, but CBD is different, it doesn’t block out pain completely, which allows you to feel when your body reaches its limits.

Anxiety

Function360: Whilst physiotherapists don’t see patients primarily for anxiety; injury and pain often go hand in hand with anxiety. In our experiences, when people are told WHY they are in pain, and they understand their injury process, they automatically become calmer and more accepting of their injury, giving a sense of relief and make much more progress with their recovery plan. Myofascial release is often used to treat anxiety specifically, and we have seen incredible results and reactions from our patients who LOVE this treatment!

CBD: Anxiety affects a huge segment of the population and there is a tonne of pharmaceutical drugs to tackle the problem. Some of these drugs (such as Prozac and Zoloft) work by changing serotonin re-uptake (serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate your mood, sleep, memory, behaviour and low levels of it have been linked to depression. CBD works on the same system, it impacts the serotonin receptors in the brain, involved with anxiety and depression. So far it’s been found to be an effective treatment for social anxiety, and studies have shown it can even reduce the fear of public speaking!

Arthritis and joint pain

Function360: We use a combination of manual therapy and progressive strengthening to help tackle arthritis and joint pain. It is important that you as a patient, understand the process with arthritis. It is an irreversible condition but can be slowed down and well managed with the right treatments.

CBD: CBD helps to prevent the ‘re-uptake’ of adenosine, a natural agent linked to inflammation throughout the body. CBD’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties mean that it is an effective treatment for the symptoms of arthritis, chronic pain, joint pain and autoimmune diseases. It is being studied for its possible benefits in treating inflammatory heart disease.

Skin benefits (circulation)

Function360: Our skin is the largest organ in the body and is closely linked to many of our internal body systems. Sports massage and other soft tissue therapies help circulation which stimulate skin-cell regeneration through blood flow to the skin.

CBD:  Inflammation is the root cause of most skin issues. CBD’s anti-inflammatory benefits translate to skincare, helping to soothe irritation and avoid redness and puffiness. It has become a star ingredient in many skincare products, it’s even been shown to fight acne. It works by binding to a special set of receptors on the skin that detect heat, itching and pain.

Sleep issues

Function360: Soft tissue therapies such as Myofascial Therapy and Deep Tissue Therapy help to relax and calm the nervous system. This can have an impact on your sleep patterns. Pain reduction from a verity of our treatments including Physiotherapy & Dry Needling reduce sleep deprivation caused by discomfort.

CBD: On top of its effects with stress and pain reduction (both huge sleep inhibitors), CBD directly impacts your sleep/wake cycle. We are still not 100% sure how it works, but it’s likely due to effects within the many regulatory processes of the endocannabinoid system. CBD has been found to boost energy in those suffering from fatigue. It has also been found to help even out REM-sleep issues for patients with PTSD and, unlike sleeping pills, doesn’t have long-term side effects!

We are big fans of ditching painkillers and trading them in for more natural or holistic alternatives where possible. These are often more effective and better at solving the root of the problem, instead of masking symptoms. That is exactly why we are reaching for CBD products to compliment our therapies at the Function360 Clinic.
